The English runner prevailed in the arrival near the Cathedral of Santa María to the Eritrean Biniam Girmay (Intermarché-Circus-Wanty) and the Belgian Jarne van de Paar (Lotto-Dstny), second and third of the stage, respectively.
The British sprinter ended the winning streak for the Intermarché-Circus-Wanty team in what could have been a perfect week of triumphs, having won three trophies out of five in the race.
The Soudal-QuickStep did a perfect job leading Vernon into a winning sprint, avoiding a crash in the last 3km involving Frenchman Nacer Bouhanni.
A four man escape –Xabier Berasategi (Euskaltel-Euskadi), Ivan Cobo (Kern Pharma), Vincent Van Hemelen (Team Flanders-Baloise) and Marc Terrasa (Aluminios Cortizo) – managed to establish a margin from the neutralized zone, but they ended up swallowed by the peloton. With 18 kilometers to go, the group was rolling compactly; The circuit through the city of Palma then began and Vernon prevailed after four laps.
