The handball world championships, which we co-organized with Sweden, failed for the Poles. The dream of Patryk Rombel’s team was to advance to the quarter-finals, but after the first group stage we knew that achieving this goal would be almost impossible.
In the first part of the tournament, the Poles lost to France (24:26) and Slovenia (23:32), which allowed them to advance to the next phase without a point. They advanced because in the last round they defeated Saudi Arabia (27:24).
We started the second phase of the tournament with a defeat to Spain (23:27), which definitely lost our chance to advance to the quarter-finals and at the same time to the Olympic Games in Paris in 2024. Further victories at the World Cup against Montenegro (27:20) and Iran (26:20) 22) no longer mattered to us.
Szmal about the future Romba
Due to the failure to achieve the goal, the future of our team’s coach was in question. In an interview with the portal, the former goalkeeper of our team, currently vice-president of the Polish Handball Association – Sławomir Szmal spoke about this.
– This is still a hot topic. We have an appointment with the coach for February 6th. We will analyze the championship and decisions will be made later – said Szmal.
– This is a really hot topic. Reading articles in the media, I see that there is interest in the function of the head coach of the Polish national team. But I don’t want to say more about it. It is up to the President of the Polish United Workers’ Party to decide – he added.
Rombel has been working with the team since February 2019. The World Championships in Poland and Sweden were his main goal of preparation. Last year, Rombel led the team at the European Championships, where our team took 12th place.
