The Armenian authorities plan to introduce military service in the armed forces of the country for women on a voluntary basis, the reform will be carried out in the near future. According to RBC, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated this in a message on the Day of the Army, which is celebrated in Armenia on January 28.

β€œIn the near future, we plan to introduce a completely new institution in the Republic of Armenia β€” voluntary military service for women,” he said.

The prime minister thanked the women serving in the army, including those who signed a contract.

In early January, Deputy Defense Minister Arman Sargsyan spoke about the development of a bill to attract women to military service, writes Sputnik Armenia. The deputy head of the department noted that the reason was the activity of women in matters related to defense. He noted that the Ministry of Defense organized shooting training courses for women and their results pleasantly surprised the military. Sargsyan stressed that military service for women would be exclusively voluntary.

Army Day is celebrated in Armenia annually on January 28. It is timed to the date of the formation of the armed forces of the republic. This year marks the 31st anniversary of this event. The holiday has been celebrated since 2001, the day is considered a non-working day.
