Cavani and three Uruguay players are sanctioned by Fifa for bad behavior at the World Cup

The FIFA Disciplinary Committee communicated this Friday the sanctions against the selection of Uruguay for the incidents that occurred after the elimination in its group of the world Cup 2022, including four game suspensions against José Giménez and Fernando Muslera, and one against Edinson Cavani and Diego Godin.

In addition, the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF, for its Spanish acronym) was punished with the partial closure of its stadium for the next home game (FIFA match) and with the payment of a fine of US$ 54,300 ( BRL 273 thousand at the current exchange rate).

The AUF was held responsible “for the discriminatory behavior of its fans, as well as for inappropriate conduct, offensive and inappropriate behavior and violation of the principles of good sportsmanship by members of its national team”.

The incidents took place at the end of the match Uruguay won 2-0 against Ghana, on December 2, in the third round of Group H at the World Cup in Qatar. Despite the victory, Celeste was eliminated due to South Korea’s 2-1 victory with a late goal in the other decisive game, against Portugal, which had already secured its place in the round of 16.

The punishments for Giménez, Muslera, Cavani and Godín took place because the players exhibited “incorrect attitudes and behavior”, according to the official FIFA statement.

Sanctions against defender Giménez and goalkeeper Muslera are the most important. In addition to the four-game suspension, they were sentenced to “do community service through football and a fine of US$21,700 (R$110,900).

Striker Cavani and defender Godín were punished with one match, also with “community service through football” and a slightly smaller fine of US$ 16,200 (R$ 82,800).

The decisions of the FIFA Disciplinary Committee were notified to the parties this Friday and the suspensions “will be fulfilled in the next official matches of the Uruguayan Football Association national team”.
