The judges allowed training to start from the 18th starting bar, but in the qualifications they set the 10th platform. The competitors did not reach the speed of 100 km/h on the threshold. With such a low inrun and very little wind under skis, it is impossible to fly away on a mammoth, especially in Bad Mitterndorf. There are no half-measures on the hill in Kulm – either it will blow under the skis or not at all.
A whimsical Kulm for most jumpers. Four Poles with a promotion
Exceeding 180 meters bordered on a miracle, only a few jumpers did it for a long time. 170 meters was also almost unattainable for most. This group of weaker jumpers included Jakub Wolny today, who jumped only 149 meters and turned out to be the biggest unlucky of the competition. He placed 41st, so he did not qualify for the competition. He missed promotion by 1.2 points. It was enough to jump a meter further.
Aleksander Zniszczo fared better. He gained 179.5 meters, and the qualifications were so that he was immediately promoted to the competition. He ended up in the third ten.
We had to wait a long time for the first jump over 200 meters. Finally, this impotence was broken by Gregor Deschwanden, who started with number 38, i.e. in the second half of the starting list. He jumped 200.5 meters.
The Slovenians gave a real show of strength. Domen Prevc, Ziga Jelar, Lovro Kos and Timi Zajc jumped about 220 meters. They held the top four places for a long time and it seemed that no one else would be able to fly that far. But Andreas Wellinger (230.5 meters), Ryoyu Kobayashi and Halvor Egner Granerud (both 229.5 meters) significantly outperformed them.
Kamil Stoch jumped confidently, landing on the 205th meter. Fortunately, Piotr Żyle, who had measured 223 meters, blew. He was flying pretty low over the landing pad almost all the time. It looked as if he was about to fall on the boule, but he was carried away by the gust in the lower part. Dawid Kubacki flew even further – 228 meters. Polish leaders did not disappoint.
The Friday king of Kulm turned out to be Stefan Kraft. The Austrian won the qualification with a jump of 233 meters.
The results of the WC qualification in ski flying on the Kulm mammoth:
- 1. Stefan Kraft (Austria) 207 points
