How to assist a person who has fainted: these are some practical tips

What to do when someone faints? How to assist him? These are two questions that arise regarding a situation that occurred yesterday, Thursday, January 26, during a press conference offered by the Ministry of the Interior with the police leadership, in Quito.

While Juan Zapata, head of the branch portfolio, intervened, one of the three policemen who were standing behind the board of directors fainted.

‘Please help my partner. It happens in the best families. Don’t worry’: policeman fainted during a press conference in Quito

“Please help my partner. It happens in the best families. Don’t worry”, was the response of the minister who was next to General Fausto Salinas, commander of the Police; and Fausto Olivo, General Director of Police Investigation.

Zapata continued speaking while the uniformed man was still on the floor. In fact, he and the two chiefs looked back, but there was no attempt to help the officer up.

This generated questions on social networks even more so when the current Minister of the Interior was at the time the general director of ECU911, a body that coordinates assistance in cases of emergency.

William Muñoz, chief of the Specialized Ambulance Division of the Guayaquil Fire Department, indicated that the signs that a person is about to faint are: sweating, paleness, babbling, among others.

In response to a request from this Journal, the institution indicated that in the event of being present or close to a person who has fainted, it is important to verify that the environment of the victim or patient is clear, notify ECU911 and verify the state of consciousness.

For this, it is vital to check if the patient is alert, if he responds to verbal stimulation and if there is a reaction to pain.

“If it does not respond to the state of consciousness, check the basic vital signs such as pulse and respiration,” said the entity. If the person has a pulse and breathing, they must be placed in a lateral safety position.

In case the person suffers from hypertension, epilepsy or glucose problems, the following aspects should be considered:

– Measure glucose.

– Take blood pressure in the case of hypertension.

– Let the convulsive crisis pass, give him the medication if he has it or if it is necessary.

“In any of these cases, it must be evaluated by a specialist, therefore the call to ECU911 is important,” said the Guayaquil Fire Department.

The following tips can be followed as alternative stimuli:

– Alcohol, as it stimulates the airways.

– Sugar, if there is a drop in glucose it can revive the patient. But it is important to note that candies or liquids should not be given. In this case, a quarter of a piece of candy can be ground and placed under the patient’s or victim’s tongue. In this way you will absorb the sugar without obstructing the airways.

Locals for the sale of police and military clothing will be registered in the province of Guayas

– If the person is in a hypotensive crisis, the extremities can be elevated so that there is greater venous return and the heart can continue beating with the force it needs.

– When the patient is having a seizure, nothing should be put in his mouth (rags or other objects). Do not stretch his fingers, since in the epileptic process there may be a fracture.

– Do not seat the person who has fainted in the first instance. You have to leave her lying down until you check her vital signs or her state of consciousness. After that she can sit it down. (YO)
