How Zieliński and Hugo Nys advanced to the doubles final of the Australian Open Grand Slam on Thursday. The Polish-Monaca doubles defeated the French pair Jeremy Chardy/Fabrice Martin 6:3, 5:7, 6:2 and achieved the greatest success in their career. This result can be considered a surprise, but a much bigger surprise is the second pair that registered in the final.
Hijikata and Kubler the biggest sensation of this year’s Australian Open
The Pole and Monegasque will fight for the triumph with the Australian couple Rinky Hijikata / Jason Kubler. The first is ranked 277th in the doubles ranking, and the second is 163rd on this list. They play in the tournament thanks to the “wild card” granted by the organizers and, to the great joy of the local audience, they are doing great.
In the second round, they defeated the British-Finnish duo Lloyd Glasspool/Harri Heliovaar, playing with the “six”. The most spectacular victory came in the quarter-finals. The Australians easily dismissed the top seed Wesley Koolhof/Neal Skupski. The Dutchman and the Brit were the strong favorites of the match, and they lost 3:6, 1:6 after just over an hour of fighting. In the semifinals, Hijikata and Kubler defeated Spanish-Argentine doubles Marcel Granollers/Horacio Zeballos 6-4, 6-2 to reach the event finals.
Zieliński and Nys will fight for the triumph in the Australian Open on Saturday, January 28. The start of the final is scheduled for 11:00 Polish time. For both couples, the victory will be by far the biggest success in their careers. Hijikata and Kubler will fight to repeat the success of Nick Kyrgios and Thanasi Kokkinakis from last season. The home favorites then defeated another Australian couple, Matthew Ebden and Max Purcell, 7-5, 6-4.
