On Tuesday, January 24, Cezary Kulesza announced that Fernando Santos was the new coach of the Polish national team. In addition to winning promotion to the European Championship, the task of the 68-year-old Portuguese is, among others, introducing young players who will gradually replace veterans, such as Kamil Glik or Grzegorz Krychowiak.
Nawałka assessed the defense of the national team. “The situation is getting better”
In an interview for “Interia Sport”, Adam Nawałka admitted that the staff situation of the Polish national team is not as bad as it might seem. The former coach said that both old and young players can still play in the squad – especially in the back line, which the 65-year-old talked about the most.
– The personnel situation is getting better. There are more and more players playing in good foreign clubs. Let’s take center backs. Kamil Glik is still able to give the national team a lot. Jakub Kiwior will try to fight for a place at Arsenal. This club plays on many fronts, so I don’t see any threat that Jakub will not be in the match rhythm. We know what the English league looks like, how many matches are played in it. After that, among others was obtained – said Nawałka.
The former coach of Lech Poznań also raised the topic of Jan Bednarek, who after being loaned to Aston Villa could not count on regular appearances in the Premier League. Fortunately, the 26-year-old has returned to Southampton where he is sure to get more minutes on the pitch. – Let’s not forget that Janek Bednarek is in reserve. He is returning to Southampton and will probably play regularly – Adam Nawałka emphasized.
Adam Nawałka appointed a new leader
In the context of the defense of the Polish national team, Adam Nawałka also mentioned Sebastian Walukiewicz. According to the 65-year-old defender on loan to Empoli, he will be one of the most important players in the defense line of our team in the future.
– There is also Sebastian Walukiewicz, who in my opinion will soon be a pillar of our defensive game. He moved to Empoli and recovered from injuries that prevented his development. He is a fantastic talent, when he was only 17, he was already in the circle of our interests when I was in charge of the Polish national team – said the former coach.
In 2019, Walukiewicz went to Cagliari Calcio, leaving Pogoń Szczecin for EUR 3.5 million. The 22-year-old is currently on loan to Empoli. In Serie A, the player has already played 44 matches in which he scored one goal.
