Iga Świątek and Hubert Hurkacz are no longer in the tournament, but the Australian Open 2023 is the biggest sports adventure in Magda Linette’s career. The 30-year-old Poznań resident is achieving her greatest success in her career – in Melbourne she has already advanced to the semi-finals.
Magda Linette’s new nickname
A Polish woman writes a great story in the Australian tournament. Her exploits did not go unnoticed by foreign media and fans. Linette’s form resulted in a new nickname, which was given to her, among others. via the Twitter account “Relevant Tennis”, as well as through the portal nzherald.co.nz and “Fox Sports”. Everywhere Linette has been called the “giant slayer”.
The nickname did not come out of nowhere, because Linette dismissed four seeded players, including one of the top ten WTA rankings. She managed the former runner-up, Estonian Anett Kontaveit (WTA 19th), Russian Jekaterina Aleksandrova (WTA 18th), Caroline Garcia (WTA 4th) and finally Karolina Pliskova (WTA 31st), the former leader of the ranking.
“Magda Linette is still “only” the 45th tennis player in the WTA ranking. “Only” for what she does. The Polish woman has just entered the top four at the Australian Open. In one of the largest, most important tournaments, she defeated another star. More – she dominated her, led the rival to throw a racket and spoil it at the moment of her to be or not to be ” – .
“If anyone knows how to turn off the nervous system, it’s Magda Linette for sure. The tennis player shining at the Australian Open could conduct training on calmness, self-control and consistency. After advancing to the semi-finals, a life success, she finally allowed herself a short moment of joy, because throughout the entire match she repeated only one gesture already well known from her showpiece in Melbourne” – .
In the semi-finals, Magda Linette will play with the main favorite for the final triumph – Aryna Sabalenka.
