After more than a month of searching, Cezary Kulesza has found a coach who will take over the Polish national team after Czesław Michniewicz. The Portuguese arrived in Warsaw on Monday noon, and his official presentation was scheduled for Tuesday at 1:00 p.m.
Jerzy Engel defends Polish trainers
Jerzy Engel admitted that in his opinion the national team should always be led by a Polish coach. The 70-year-old defended the national trainers, noting that they are also successful and develop Polish football.
– My opinion has been known for a long time. I lectured at the Polish school of trainers, e.g. among many excellent lecturers, including those coming from abroad. That is why I am in favor of the Polish national team always being led by Polish trainers – said Engel.
– Polish coaches are also praised for their training ideas, good team management, etc. Nobody criticizes Beenhakker, but when we look at what was left of him or another coach or what they achieved more than Polish coaches at major events, nothing came of it . None of them has achieved as much as, for example, Czesław Michniewicz and this is an indicator of what can possibly be left behind – the former coach explained.
Engel is disappointed with Santos’ choice. “Not much left of them”
In addition, the national team selector in 2000-2002 added that employing a foreigner in the most important football position in the country is a high risk. The 70-year-old referred to the examples of Leo Beenhakker and Paulo Sousa, who said goodbye to the Polish national team in not very friendly circumstances.
– This is the most important team in our country and putting it in the hands of people from abroad is always associated with a high risk. Even if they were the best coaches, and Leo Beenhakker and Paulo Sousa were very good in the 21st century. So we can say that there are two highly recognized coaches from abroad, but there is not much left of them – said Jerzy Engel.
At the same time, the former sports director of PZPN admitted that in addition to leaving the qualifying group for Euro 2024, the task of the new coach is to improve the style of our team’s play.
– This promotion seems very simple. We have a very supportive group and therefore we will definitely go out. All that is expected of a new coach is for this national team to play joyfully,” said the 70-year-old.
