UFC champion Islam Makhachev called Dagestan the best republic in the world for wrestlers
Champion of the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) in lightweight, Russian Islam Makhachev called the reasons for his success in the promotion. His words are quoted by ESPN.
“Because I am from Dagestan, the best republic in the world for wrestlers. When we were children, we fought on the street and in general anywhere, so we have such good skills, ”Makhachev said. He added that punching technique can be improved in a month, but wrestling must be practiced for a lifetime in order to achieve good results.
On the night of October 23, Makhachev defeated Brazilian Charles Oliveira in a fight at UFC 280 in Abu Dhabi. The 31-year-old Russian defeated his opponent by choke and became the organization’s lightweight champion.
On February 12, Makhachev will fight with Australian Alexander Volkanovski, who currently tops the list of the best fighters in the promotion, regardless of weight categories. The fight will take place in Australia at the UFC 284 tournament. Thus, Makhachev will defend the UFC championship belt for the first time.
