Last Sunday we got to know the first four teams that will play in the knockout phase of the World Cup, which takes place in Poland and Sweden. France and Spain advanced from group I, and Sweden and Hungary from group II. On Monday, they were to meet the rivals they would face in the quarter-finals.
Norway beat the Germans in a hit and won the group. Denmark didn’t give Egypt a chance
Before the last round of games in Group III, the top two places were occupied by Germany and Norway respectively. The head-to-head match between these two teams on Monday was to decide who would take first place in the group.
The meeting started better for the Norwegians, who were leading 4:1 after five minutes. In the following minutes, the Germans presented themselves better, thanks to which they reduced their losses. They even managed to tie the game 16:16, but Norway was leading 18:16 at the break.
After a few minutes of the second half, the Germans led to 20:20. Then they had to chase the rival again, and finally in the 52nd minute they took the lead for the first time (25:24). In just two minutes, their situation was complicated after a red card for Luka Witzke. Norway took advantage of the power play period and scored three goals, in addition, Torbjorn Bergerud had a phenomenal save, who scored 55 percent throughout the match. Largely thanks to him, the Norwegians eventually won 28:26.
At the same time as the match between Norway and Germany, the match between Egypt and Denmark took place, which decided about the first place in group IV. The team from Africa was in a better situation and a draw was enough. However, they did not match the Danes, who dominated from the beginning and were leading by up to seven goals (12:5). They went into the break with the result 17:12, and in the second part they maintained the advantage and finally won 30:25.
After these results, we already know the set of quarter-final pairs in the championship. The Norwegians face Spain, the Germans face France, the Swedes face Egypt, and the Danes face Hungary. All meetings are scheduled for Wednesday, January 25.
