Kafelnikov called the exit of Karen Khachanov in 1/4 of the Australian Open-2023 a pleasant surprise
The 2000 Olympic tennis champion Yevgeny Kafelnikov called the performance of the Russian Karen Khachanov in the 1/8 finals match of the Australian Open-2023 brilliant. His words are quoted by RIA Novosti.
Kafelnikov said that Khachanov’s entry into the quarterfinals was a pleasant surprise for him. “It’s hard to keep concentration, the opponent took advantage of this, started a fight, but we must pay tribute that Karen completed this third set in his favor,” Kafelnikov assessed the game of the Russian.
Earlier on Sunday, January 22, Khachanov defeated the Japanese Yoshihito Nishioka with a score of 6:0, 6:0, 7:6(4). Thus, for the first time in his career, he reached the quarterfinals of the Australian Open.
Andrey Rublev will also represent Russia at this stage of the tournament. The match against Dane Holger Vitus Rune will take place on January 23rd.
The Russians play at tournaments of the Association of Tennis Professionals and the Women’s Tennis Association, including the Australian Open, in a neutral status. Athletes are deprived of the flag and anthem.
