This has never happened at the Australian Open before. Historical edition

There were some sensational results in the first week of competition on the courts in Melbourne. The great favorites led by Iga Świątek (1st WTA) and Rafael Nadal (1st ATP) said goodbye to the competition. At the moment, the highest seeded men and women are Jessica Pegula (3rd WTA) and Stefanos Tsisipas (3rd ATP). Due to the lack of advancement of the favorites to the quarter-finals, this year’s edition of the Australian Open has gone down in history.

Historical Australian Open. Leaders outside the quarterfinals. For the first time in history

According to the International Tennis Federation (IFT), for the first time in the so-called In the Open era, i.e. since 1968, it happened that the two highest-seeded tennis players missed the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam event.

In the women’s tournament, Iga Witek was eliminated in the fourth round after losing 4:6, 4:6 to Jelena Rybakina (25th WTA), the winner of Wimbledon half a year ago. In turn, the vice-leader of the WTA ranking Ons Jabeur said goodbye to the courts in Melbourne in the second round of the tournament, after a rather sensational loss to the 86th in the ranking Czech Marketa Voundrousova. Thus, the highest-ranked player in the quarter-finals will be Jessica Pegula.

The situation is similar in the male single. Rafael Nadal (ATP 1) was eliminated in the second round after losing 4-6, 4-6, 5-7 to Mackenzie McDonald (65th ATP). Seeded 2nd Casper Ruud bid farewell to the Australian Open after losing to Jenson Brooksby (39th ATP). Therefore, the best tennis player who remained in the tournament is currently Stefanos Tsistipias.

The decisive decisions in the Australian Open will be made next weekend. On Saturday, January 28, we will know the winner of the women’s tournament, and a day later the men’s.
