Krystyna Feldman was born into a Polish-Jewish family of artists. Her mother was a theater actress and opera singer, and her father was known as the most famous Shakespeare actor in Lviv. The actress knew from a young age that she would follow in her parents’ footsteps. Her greatest passion was theater, although she gained popularity thanks to the role of Grandma Rozalia, which she played for 8 years in the cult series
She ran away from school to play in the theater. Her plans were thwarted by the war
Krystyna Feldman’s father died when she was only 4 years old. After his death, the mother of the future actress moved to Krakow, where she became involved with another man. The stepfather did not support his stepdaughter’s passion and decided to send her to a trade school. Krystyna couldn’t cope with her studies and one day she simply ran away. Then she began her education at the State Institute of Theater Arts. Her talent was quickly noticed, entrusting the young Feldman with one of the roles in the theater in Lviv. When the war broke out in 1942, the future star was conscripted into the Home Army as a liaison officer. After the armistice, she returned to the theater stage.
Love of life. She was faithful to him until her death
Soon after, Krystyna Feldman’s life turned upside down. The actress met a director 30 years her senior, Stanisław Bryliński, for whom she completely lost her head. Unfortunately, the man was formally married at the time, which was a significant obstacle to their relationship. The Feldman family also did not support the artist’s relationship with a much older man. In the end, love won. – We moved in together, we lived on a cat’s paw, because he was still not divorced – Feldman years ago in one of the interviews.
Unfortunately, their happiness did not last long. After 6 years of living together, the director was diagnosed with meningitis. Despite a long struggle for his recovery, Stanisław Bryliński died on October 10, 1953. Krystyna Feldman remained faithful to him until his death.
She was the master of episodes. She got the main role only at the end of her life
Krystyna Feldman was known as the master of supporting roles. Despite the undoubted talent, in her filmography there are mainly episodes. However, this was not a problem for the artist. “There are no small roles, only small actors,” she said. It was only 3 years before her death, at the age of 88, that she was offered her first leading role in Krzysztof’s film.
The joy of the success of the production was taken away from her by the attack she became a victim of. The actress and her half-sister were attacked and robbed by unknown perpetrators. Feldman then lost her purse containing the rosary, cigarettes and PLN 1,200. The artist was hospitalized with a femur fracture and was confined to a wheelchair for the rest of her life. The perpetrators were caught quickly, because the youngest of the thieves, a 15-year-old boy, boasted to his friends that he “settled Grandma Kiepska”.
The artist spent the last years of her life in a poor studio apartment in Poznań. For some time she also struggled with lung cancer, but decided to give up treatment. Krystyna Feldman died on January 24, 2007 at the age of 91. She remained professionally active until the end of her life.
