Rudi Voller will be Germany’s new sporting director

Former striker and coach Rudi Voller will be the sporting director of the German national team from February, replacing Olivier Bierhoff, the German Football Association (DFB) announced on Thursday.

After the team was eliminated in the first round at the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, the DFB decided that a group of five former players, including Voller, will lead the team’s revival.

This group proposed that Voller succeed Bierhoff, who resigned in early December after 18 years on the German coaching staff.

Voller coached the national team between 2000 and 2004, being world runner-up in 2002 after losing the final to Brazil. Two years later, at the Eurocopa de Portugal, his team fell in the first phase.

In his career as a player, he won the World Cup with Germany in 1990, retiring four years later, in the United States World Cup.

Voller’s first objective is to “lay the foundations for a successful Euro 2024 as host”, he said in a statement from the DFB.

“In his own way, with his achievements as a player, coach and manager, he managed to get the fans excited,” said current Germany coach Hansi Flick, who will remain in charge despite the failure at the World Cup in Qatar.
