England defender Anton Walkes, of Charlotte FC, died this Thursday at the age of 25 after suffering a maritime accident in the US state of Florida, according to the soccer league of the United States (MLS) and the local press.
“MLS is mourning the death of Anton Walkes, Charlotte FC quarterback, who passed away early Thursday morning in an accident in South Florida,” the league said in a statement.
According to the broadcaster Local 10the accident happened on Wednesday afternoon, when the vessel he was driving collided with another near the pier of the Miami Marine Stadium.
The player was found unconscious and received cardiopulmonary resuscitation by a rescue team before being taken to a hospital in serious condition.
Walkes “was a tremendous son, father, partner and teammate whose lighthearted way of life moved everyone who knew him,” Charlotte FC owner David Tepper said in a statement.
“There are no words to describe everyone’s grief at MLS following the tragic death of Anton Walkes,” the league added. “Anton was a talented and dedicated player, much loved by his teammates and fans alike.”
Walkes was formed in the youth categories of Tottenham and, later, defended Porthsmouth, also of England.
In 2020, he transferred to Atlanta United, from MLS. In December 2021, he was hired by Charlotte FC for the franchise’s debut year in the American League and started 21 of the 23 games played by the team.
