On January 12, the head coach of the Russian national gymnastics team, Valentina Rodionenko, announced that Latynina had suffered a heart attack. Olga Korkich, director of the Larisa Latynina Olympic Reserve School for Artistic Gymnastics, did not confirm this information, saying that the champion had a microstroke and her condition was stable.
Latynina is the most titled gymnast in the history of the Olympic Games, as well as the leader in the number of victories at the Olympic Games among domestic athletes. She won 18 medals, 9 of which were gold.
