Russian high diving champion Leyla Salyamova died at the age of 23 in an accident in Karelia

Russian high diving champion Leyla Salyamova has died at the age of 23. This was announced to TASS by the President of the Russian Diving Federation Stanislav Druzhinin.

The athlete died in a car accident. Druzhinin expressed condolences to the Salamova family and promised to provide support from the federation. “This is shocking news for us. I can’t imagine the horror experienced by her parents and relatives,” he said.

According to Match TV, the accident occurred in Karelia at the 163rd kilometer of the Sortavala highway. As a result of a collision between Mitsubishi Lancer and Volkswagen Tiguan, the driver and passenger of Mitsubishi were killed.

Saliamova became the champion of Russia in 2021. The athlete also has a silver medal of the national championship in synchronized diving from a tower in 2015. She became the first Russian woman who managed to qualify for the World Championships, and also received a “wild card” for the World Series of cliff diving (cliff diving – approx. “Tapes.ru”) .
