Nevertheless, it will not be easy to return domestic football players to European tournaments, Dmitry Svishchev, a member of the State Duma Committee on Physical Culture and Sports, believes. In a conversation with Lenta.ru, he predicted difficulties for the UEFA working group on Russia’s return to international tournaments.
“It is clear that losing such a promising and interesting country as Russia is unprofitable for UEFA. Just like we would not like to lose the opportunity to play in Eurocups. We have the richest clubs with promising players, so it is in the interests of both sides to improve relations and return Russia. Another thing is that it will not be easy to achieve this, ”said Svishchev.
The Russophobic campaign, including in sports, according to the deputy, is at its peak. There are countries that will categorically oppose the participation of Russian athletes in international tournaments.
“Even the UEFA working group will be in a rather difficult position. But we must pay tribute to both this organization and the Russian Football Union: they are engaged in a productive dialogue, do not close the doors and are trying to resolve the issue, ”the politician noted.
The Russian Football Union (RFU) at the end of 2022 paid an annual fee for membership in the European Football Union (UEFA). It was also reported that the organization plans to create a working group for the return of Russian football to international tournaments.
