Argentina’s Lionel Messi named L’Equipe Athlete of the Year 2022
Lionel Messi, striker of the Argentina national football team and the French PSG, has been named L’Equipe’s Athlete of the Year 2022. This was reported on the website of the French edition.
In second place is Messi’s PSG teammate Kylian Mbappe. Third place went to the Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal. The fourth was the Belgian cyclist Remco Evenepoel, and the fifth was the Dutch driver of the Red Bull Formula 1 team Max Verstappen.
The award for the best athlete in the world has been awarded by L’Équipe since 1975. The rating is determined by the results of a secret ballot of journalists of the publication.
In 2022, Messi, along with the Argentina national team, won the World Cup in Qatar. In the decisive match against the French team, the forward converted a penalty kick in regular time, and also scored one goal in extra time and a goal in the penalty shootout. The Argentinean was recognized as the best player of the tournament.
