Iranian football player Amir Azadani sentenced to 26 years in prison for participating in protests
Iranian football player Amir Nasr Azadani received a prison sentence for participating in the protests. It is reported by Tasnim.
Initially, the football player was threatened with the death penalty, but the punishment was replaced. In total, he was sentenced to 26 years in prison on three charges. He received five years for participation in illegal groups with the intent to undermine the security of the country and for conspiracy and complicity in crimes against national security. The player was also found guilty of aiding and abetting “moharebu” (“hostile to the Almighty activity” – approx. “Tapes.ru”). On this charge, he was sentenced to 16 years in prison.
According to Iranian law, Azadani will serve his prison terms at the same time. Thus, the athlete will spend 16 years behind bars.
Earlier, the International Federation of Professional Footballers’ Associations appealed to the Iranian authorities because of the situation with Azadani. The organization said it was outraged by reports that the football player faces execution after protests in support of women’s rights. They called for the immediate lifting of his punishment.
Azadani, 26, has been a free agent since the summer of 2022. His last club was the Iranian “Iranjavan”.
