Russian chess player will play under the flag of Switzerland

Russian chess player Kosteniuk will play under the flag of Switzerland from January 1, 2024

Russian grandmaster Alexandra Kosteniuk will play under the flag of Switzerland from January 1, 2024. This was reported on the official website of the Swiss Chess Federation (FSE).

Currently, Kosteniuk plays under the flag of the International Chess Federation (FIDE). From 2024, an athlete who has a Swiss passport for more than 10 years due to her marriage to a citizen of the country will become a member of the Swiss women’s team.

At the same time, in Switzerland, they do not exclude the possibility of her playing for the men’s team. If Kosteniuk moved to the Swiss national team in 2023, the FSE would have to pay a $10,000 commission to the Russian Chess Federation (RCF). However, after a two-year waiting period, the change of federation does not require payment.

In 2022, Alexandra Kosteniuk was named Chess Player of the Year by the International Chess Federation (FIDE).

Kosteniuk is a two-time Russian champion. She won the European Team Championship five times as part of the Russian team. Kosteniuk is married to Russian grandmaster Pavel Tregubov.
