UEFA expressed condolences to Pele’s family and named him the first world football star
President of the Union of European Football Associations (UEFA) Aleksander Čeferin reacted to the death of the three-time world champion in the Brazilian team Pelé. His words are given on the website of the organization.
Čeferin called Pele the world’s first football superstar, expressing his condolences on the death of the Brazilian. “He played a pioneering role in making football the most popular sport in the world. He will be greatly missed,” he said.
Pele died at the age of 82 on December 29. Doctors at the Albert Einstein Clinic, where the former football player was located, called the failure of internal organs against the background of progressive cancer the cause of death. Pele will be buried in a vertical cemetery in the Brazilian city of Santos.
Pelé is a three-time World Cup Champion with Brazil. In 1999, the International Olympic Committee recognized the Brazilian as the athlete of the century.
