‘Retire with dignity’: Cristiano Ronaldo’s phrase in 2015, when asked if he would play in Arabia

Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo became a bombshell signing for Saudi Arabia’s Al Nassr on Friday and immediately revived an interview from 2015 in which he said he would end his career “with dignity” at a top club.

“Sign for MLS or the United Arab Emirates? I still have six or seven years left and I want to finish my career at the top, with dignity, at a great club. This does not mean that I think that going to the United States, Qatar or Dubai is not right, but I do not see myself there”, Cristiano had indicated in 2015, for an English television program.

During that year, CR7 was the jewel of Real Madrid and its European conquest. He was still unaware that he would go through Juventus, where he was champion, but he did not obtain the significance that was expected. And for Manchester United, in a bitter return, especially due to the continuous clashes with the leadership and the coaching staff.

Ronaldo, who was left without a club since last November, after leaving Manchester United, signed a million-dollar contract with Al Nassr until 2025: “I can’t wait to discover a new football championship in a different country,” tweeted the Portuguese.

“The vision of Al Nassr is very inspiring and I am happy to join my teammates so that together we can help the team achieve more success”, added the historic goalscorer.

The Portuguese will have one of the highest salaries in the world, and at his age he becomes one of the historical transfers. After a career in Europe, Ronaldo embarks on the Saudi destination, where he hopes to extend his list of titles, including the Club World Cup. (D)
