On Tuesday, the Board of Manchester United reported that the club is for sale. In an official note, the club’s current owners disclosed that they will explore alternatives to boost the club’s growth on and off the field. A possible sale is now being considered.
Selling the club is just one of the alternatives considered by the club’s board, although it is common among top English teams. At the moment, the Liverpool it is open for sale and Chelsea were sold last season.
Brothers Avram and Joel Glazer, members of the club’s board of directors, explained the board’s possible measures.
“As we seek to continue building the club’s success story, the board authorized a thorough assessment of strategic alternatives. We will evaluate all options to ensure that we serve the fans in the best way and that Manchester United maximizes the significant growth opportunities available to the club today and in the future.”
The Glazer family have owned Manchester United since 2005, when Malcom Glazer bought the club for around £790m. Management, however, left something to be desired at various times and, in the last decade, saw a period of few achievements for Manchester United and many controversies since the retirement of former coach Sir Alex Ferguson.
Recently, episodes involving Cristiano Ronaldo caused turmoil behind the scenes and the Portuguese star gave an interview in which he criticized the club’s board. The striker terminated his contract with Manchester United. The Glazers were even the target of crowd protests at the start of the season.
