Manchester United announce departure of Cristiano Ronaldo

O Manchester United announced on Tuesday the departure of striker Cristiano Ronaldo. The Portuguese star has not been getting much coverage this season and recently gave a controversial interview, criticizing the club and coach Erik ten Hag.

In an official note, the English team stated that the contract termination agreement was mutual and thanked Cristiano Ronaldo for the “immense contribution”. In addition, he added that the team “remains focused on continuing the progress under the command of Ten Hag and the group work on the pitch”.

After scoring 24 goals in 38 games last season, Cristiano is experiencing one of his worst career seasons in 2022, since Ten Hag’s arrival at the club. The player participated in 16 matches, starting in just 10, with three goals scored.

“I love Manchester United and their fans, that will never change. However, I feel this is the right time to look for a new challenge,” said the striker in an interview with Sky Sports after the announcement of the termination.

Therefore, Cristiano is free on the market to sign with any club. In the last transfer window, the name of the Portuguese was aired in several teams such as Bayern Munich, PSG and Napoli, but the interests did not materialize.

The interview granted to the English journalist Piers Morgan was decisive for Manchester United’s decision to terminate the star. Cristiano declared that he felt “betrayed” by the club and that he did not respect the current coach.

The news comes in the midst of Portugal’s preparation for its debut at the World Cup in Qatar. The Portuguese team enters the field this Thursday, against Ghana, for group H.
