Free cinema takes over the neighborhoods of Quito: Ibero-American festival starts its first edition with a billboard with varied formats

The neighborhoods of all areas of the capital will witness the first edition of the Ibero-American Festival of Quito Cine Libre, which will take place from this Wednesday 23 to Sunday 27 November in eleven movie theaters located in sectors such as the chistoric center, La Floresta, Iñaquito, La Mariscal, El Condado, Cumbayá, El Recreo, La Alameda, and the Calderón and Lloa parishes.

“We have called it free cinema precisely because of the possibility of having different formats within what programming is, such as video fiction, shorts, docufiction, children’s cinema, adolescent cinema, adult cinema…”, he expresses. Elena Almeidaproducer of the festival.

The meeting is organized by the Ecuadorian Film Academy, in conjunction with the Quito Municipality’s Secretary of Culture and the support of the Organization of Ibero-American States and public and private film chains. They also work with the Municipal Board to access various vulnerable groups, such as adolescents and children on the street, the elderly, and women at risk.

This is how more than 50 films from 15 countries (Argentina, Venezuela, Brazil, etc.) will be screened in the Capitol Theater, El Recreo Multicines, CCI, El Condado and Scala; Ocho y Medio cinema, Incine, Casas Somos de Calderón and Lloa, the Metropolitan Cultural Center and Casal Català.

The festival will be made up of two competitive sections: Panorama and New Horizons. The first will be dedicated to showing the current production of Ibero-American fiction cinema, while the second will project singular views of Ibero-American cinema in genres close to hybrid, with a strong authorial imprint. The winners of these sections will be chosen by a national and international jury; there will also be an audience award.

Within the non-competitive sections are Mujeres en corto, made up of thirteen short films made by Ibero-American women from various countries; Hummingbird Awards, a selection of the winning feature films of this competition; volcanica series of films of different formats, genres and antiquities that reflect on creative and personal freedom; Focus, which has Africa as its guest continent; children’s cinema, that includes children and adolescents in dialogues about the importance of cinema in the construction of identities; Y special functions.

In general, Almeida defines the programming as a very musical cinema, where proposals with current realities predominate. “There are many young people, many proposals on current issues, such as the environment, adolescents… in these new films perhaps we are going to see the anxieties that adolescents, young people, adults had in these moments of pandemic”, think.

Around the festival, in the morning there will be dialogues about cinema, such as the presence of creative women in cinema, the future of Ibero-American cinema, inclusion, among other topics. This Wednesday at 09:00 they will start with the conversation “State Policies for gender equity in the audiovisual world”, at Ciespal.

The schedules for the projections of the films will be several between 15:00 and 20:00. The inauguration will be this Wednesday, at 7:00 p.m., with the Argentine film karnawal, by Juan Pablo Felix. Tape tells the story of Cabra, a rebellious teenager who lives with his mother in northern Argentina, on the border with Bolivia. Cabra dreams of becoming a professional malambo dancer, the folkloric dance of the gauchos; but everything seems to take another turn when he receives an unexpected visit from his father, a con man who has just been released from jail on temporary leave.
