On Thursday, December 8, the Spanish federation announced that Luis Enrique, who had been working for the national team since 2018, had left the national team. On the same day, his successor, Luis de la Fuente, was presented.

– The Spanish federation entrusted Luis de la Fuente with the duties of the head coach of the national team. The directors will approve his appointment next Monday, reads the official announcement, which was released 45 minutes after Enrique’s dismissal.

De la Fuente has been in charge of Spain’s youth teams in recent years. From 2018, he worked with the under-21 team, where his greatest success was winning the European Championship in 2019. Then, in the group stage, his team defeated Poland led by Czesław Michniewicz 5-0.

In 2021, de la Fuente led the Spanish team at the Olympic tournament in Tokyo. There, they managed to reach the final, where Brazil turned out to be better (1:2).

The new coach of the Spaniards has already had the opportunity to play the role of the coach of the first team. In June 2021, before a friendly match against Lithuania, the entire senior national team was sent to quarantine after Sergio Busquets tested positive for COVID-19. For this reason, the under-21 team led by de la Fuente took to the field and won 4-0.
