Germany beat Costa Rica (2-4) thanks to an acceleration in the final stretch, but it was not enough to qualify for the round of 16 of Qatar 2022 because Japan beat Spain in the other Group E match.
The German team was eliminated in the group stage for the second time in a row. They took the lead with a Serge Gnabry goal after ten minutes, but Costa Rica turned around in the second half. Yeltsin Tejeda equalized in minute 58 and Juan Pablo Vargas, in minute 70, put Costa Rica ahead.
The entry of Kai Havertz was fundamental for Germany. The Chelsea player scored the two goals that gave the Germans the lead again, at 73 and 85. Niclas Fulkrug, in added time, scored the fourth.
