Italian Roberto de Zerbi is the new Brighton manager

Roberto de Zerbi was announced this Sunday as Brighton’s new manager, replacing Graham Potter, who went to Chelsea. The Italian was at Shakhtar Donetsk, but the Russian invasion of Ukraine put an end to his time at the club.

De Zerbi, 43, joins the club on a four-year contract. In his coaching career, he commanded Sassuolo for four seasons, highlighting the 2020 and 2021 campaigns at Italian Championshipboth with the team finishing in eighth place.

For Shakhtar Donetsk, the coach took the team to the group stage of Champions League and disputed with Real Madrid and Inter Milan for places in the round of 16. The team finished the Ukrainian championship as a leader, two points more than the second place, but the competition was canceled by the conflict with Russia and there was no champion.

“We looked at a number of excellent candidates, but Roberto was our number one choice from the start and the only one we spoke to,” said Brighton Deputy Chairman and CEO Paul Barber.

“We think Roberto is the best choice culturally and technically for Brighton and the ideal person to continue advancing the club with its excellent players today,” added Barber.

Currently fourth in the English Premier League, Brighton had their game this weekend against Crystal Palace for the 8th round postponed due to the death of Queen Elizabeth II. De Zerbi still needs to get a UK work visa before playing his first game with the new club, against Liverpoolon the 1st of October.
