German Minister for Economic Cooperation and Development Svenja Schulze warned of the threat of famine, which could be the strongest since the Second World War. It is reported by “Lenta.ru”.

According to Schulze, the global food crisis will be exacerbated not only by the consequences of the pandemic, but also by the drought caused by the conflict in Ukraine, as well as the economic consequences of this conflict. The representative of the department stressed that already now food prices are breaking records, and about 300 million people around the world are suffering from hunger. And these figures, in her opinion, will only grow.

Earlier, the UN estimated that the conflict in Ukraine threatens to plunge 1.7 billion people from developing countries into poverty.

On February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced the start of a special military operation in the Donbass. The goals of the special operation are called “demilitarization and denazification” of Ukraine. This was followed by tough economic sanctions by the US, the EU and other countries against Russia. Many Western companies left the Russian Federation.
