With a falling positivity rate, Ecuador will stop wearing masks; The Government will make an announcement this afternoon, but a university has already taken action

The data handled by city laboratories indicates that the positivity rate for COVID-19 is on the decline.

In laboratories it is indicated that in these weeks there is already a positivity rate of less than 4%. The latest reports handled by the health table of the Municipality of Guayaquil speak of a drop in cases and a decrease in deaths from coronavirus. In the last fifteen days no deaths have been reported.

And the Vice Minister of Health recently indicated that the COVID-19 pandemic has already ‘extinct’ in some provinces of Ecuador.

The application of the first reinforcement against COVID-19 stalls in Ecuador while concern about a possible outbreak increases

The World Health Organization (WHO) has declared that once the positivity rate is less than 5%, relaxation measures can be taken, such as stopping wearing masks in open spaces.

That is the scenario that the national government was waiting for to evaluate if it decided that the country stop wearing a mask in open spaces. And that day seems to have come. The Government will announce this afternoon a resolution in this regard.

The University of Espiritu Santo Specialties (UEES) is one of the first that this Thursday has arranged for its students to stop wearing masks in open spaces. There was an act in the central square and a count in which the community took off their masks and threw them into the air.

This study center made the decision because its population is already 100% vaccinated and because it has studies that determine that positivity is less than 5%.

The UEES justified its decision taking into account the recommendation made by the WHO when the positivity ranges are below 5%.

Spokesmen for that university indicated that the mask will continue to be used in closed spaces such as classrooms.

Fernando Espinoza, general director of the UEES Research Center, explained that this measure is only exclusively in open spaces, in closed places you can not remove the masks.

“We have seen that countries like Spain, the United States have removed the mask in closed spaces more than a month ago, but a week ago the rate of new cases of COVID-19 increased, that is to say that we must serenely apply these measures responsibly. The virus continues and we must take care of ourselves, but the indexes, studies tell us that at this time we can stop using the mask outdoors, outdoors. But they will only be able to enter the courses with masks, ”he said.

“It is not a whim of the University, it is a decision supported by constant investigations of the behavior of the virus, in the parameters dictated by the World Health Organization and that all our staff, students already have their vaccines, and many are already applying the fourth dose,” he commented.

Joaquín Hernández, rector of the UEES, indicated that the students are very happy, that they seek to share moments on campus, and that they will continue to take all the biosecurity measures as they have been done up to now. (I)
