This week, the company specializing in air quality technology IQAir published the ranking of air quality in the world for the year 2021.
This report contains particulate matter pollution data from 2.5 different ground stations located in 6,475 cities in 117 countries. 44% is operated by official agencies and the rest by scientists or organizations.
Ecuador has a fuel that does not meet the quality standards that govern Europe, if those of the country with parameters that date back 20 years
This concentration was selected because it corresponds to the measurement of one of the six air pollutants that are routinely measured. “Common chemical components of PM2.5 include sulfates, nitrates, carbon black, and ammonia. The most common man-made sources include internal combustion engines, power generation, industrial processes, agricultural processes, construction, and residential wood and coal burning.
At a natural level, this material is also generated in dust storms, sand and forest fires.
The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends having a reference value of 5 micrograms per cubic meter (5 µg/m3). The report also revealed that only 3% of cities meet the annual air quality guideline, at the country level. none comply.
Cases and deaths from skin cancer are on the rise, despite the fact that the ozone layer is recovering
At the country level, Bangladesh and Chad occupy the first two places with 76.9 µg/m3 and 75.9 µg/m3. At the South American level, these are the locations of each of the countries:
- Peru (26): 29.6 µg/m3
- Chile (40): 21.7 µg/m3
- Uruguay (71): 14.2 µg/m3
- Colombia (72): 14.1 µg/m3
- Brazil (75): 13.6 µg/m3
- Ecuador (96): 8.4 µg/m3
- Argentina (97): 8.2 µg/m3
“Air quality in China continued to improve in 2021. More than half of the cities in China included in the report experienced lower levels of air pollution compared to the previous year,” it explained.
most polluting cities
Of the 6,475 cities that make up the ranking, only 222 met the PM2.5 recommended by the WHO. In addition, 93 cities exceeded the guideline 10 times.
New Delhi (India) led the ranking of the most polluted cities with a concentration of 85 µg/m3, followed by Dhaka (Bangladesh) with 78.1 µg/m3, N’Djamena (Chad) with 77.6 µg/m3, Dushanbe ( Tajikistan) with 59.5 µg/m3 and Muscat (Oman) with 53.9 µg/m3.
“More than half of the cities in China included in the report experienced lower levels of air pollution compared to the previous year. Pollution levels within the capital city of Beijing continued a nine-year trend of improving air quality,” it added.
The report indicated that in Africa, South America and the Middle East, air quality monitoring is poor. These are the locations of the South American cities:
- Lima-Peru (22): 31.5 µg/m3
- Santiago-Chile (30): 25.8 µg/m3
- Montevideo-Uruguay (64): 14.2 µg/m3
- Bogotá-Colombia (67): 13.7 µg/m3
- Buenos Aires-Argentina (69): 13.6 µg/m3
- Quito-Ecuador (88): 8.4 µg/m3. (I)
