‘I want you to know me for my work,’ says actress Shany Nadan, who tomorrow premieres ‘Las Villamizar’ on Caracol Television

made the decision to ‘go try your luck’ in Colombia seven years agowhen I was 23 years old and had already achieved important successes, especially in the theater scene in Guayaquil. But what began as a then still uncertain adventure translated for the actress Shany Nadantoday 30 years old, at the gateway to important international chains such as TelemundoNetflix, Fox Telecolombia, Caracol Television and others that you already have in mind. “Of course, people find out what character you’re in, but they don’t know about all the others castings what have you done and perhaps they have told you ‘sorry, thank you very much, but no’. This is a race of a lot of patience and determination”, he confessed in a recent conversation via Zoom with La Revista.

This week, Shany will be able to sit down and enjoy a well-deserved moment of celebration with the premiere of The Villamizar at the sign of Snail Television (Colombia), the new period and action series in which he shares the leading role with the actresses María José Vargas and Estefanía Piñeres. The three are the Villamizar sisters, three women who fight for freedom from the Spanish forces and also for justice after the death of their mother. “What I love is that the series is told from 100% female point of viewfrom the honest, real, complete and complex perspective of what it means to be a woman and not from a stereotype”, he highlights.

What can you say about the series and your character?

The series takes place in the historical and social context of 1800, when the Creoles were seeking liberation from the Spanish yoke, but with emphasis on the female role and the role that women had at that time, especially in espionage, through infiltrating and sharing strategic information to the liberating army to achieve the long-awaited independence.

My character, Carolina is the eldest of the three Villamizar sisters and is their protector, the brave, the rational, the strategist., which mentalizes the next step. A woman who controls her emotions well and who puts the common good before her personal needs because she is at the service of something greater, freedom.

How was your preparation for this role?

It was quite peculiar because it was during the first year of the pandemic and a large part of the rehearsals were virtual (…). And when we were able to see each other, we also did rehearsals with Golpe de Gracia, which is the company in charge of the stunt and of the action scenes, for handling vintage weapons (swords and guns). We had to learn a lot about stage combat as well because there are fight scenes and for several weeks we prepared generic movements.so to speak, isolated movements to then compose choreographies on set, according to the needs of the scene and according to the location in which we are recording.

How was your relationship with María José and Estefanía?

I consider them my sisters not only in the series, but also outside of fiction. We have an amazing sisterhood and good chemistry, we talk to each other to this day because we are not only good colleagues, but also good friends. They were very easy to work with, everything felt very organic and natural and we already looked like sisters before we even started recording.

How do you feel working for these big chains?

Very honored and grateful because I have had the opportunity to perfect and increase my professional quality. Working with such high-level actors has been rewarding for me, but above all It has been a challenge because I have had to raise my work bar, try twice as hard to get to what the director wants to see, each project has challenged me more. And, as an Ecuadorian, working with these international chains has been not only an honor, but also to be able to take a piece of my land with me, a piece to show what is here in Ecuadorall the talent.

Do you think your theatrical training helped you rise to international competition?

It is the most complete training there is, without a doubt. It gives you a great capacity for improvisation and makes you more recursive. If I am grateful to theater for one thing, it is that it allowed me to explore my entire work apparatus, voice, body, acting, and memorize texts that are very long and difficult to learn. It gives you a lot of speed and mental and physical agility and you can transfer all of that to television and you become a more flexible actor. Without the theater I would not have been able to be the actress that I am today.

How do you divide your time between Ecuador and Colombia?

I work in Colombia and I live in Ecuador (laughs), that’s what I always say! In other words, I work seven or eight months in Colombia and the rest of the time I take advantage of to go to Ecuador and be with my family., because really when I’m working I have no life. The pandemic has made it easier for castings are now mostly virtual, then I can work from Guayaquil, send them and once I have to make a callback or I have to go face-to-face, I travelI do it and I return.

What do you miss about your country when you are working in Colombia?

My family comes first, my friends, who are my circle since school and who know me very well, beyond Shany, the actress. Also the weather, without a doubt, having access to the beach and the foodI miss my shellfish, my ceviche, my casserole.

Your career is also characterized by having stayed away from controversy or gossip, how have you achieved it?

By nature, I am an extremely intimate person. I am to say very few things in my personal life, I am very reserved and I have always been. So it’s not that I applied a strategy per sebut I continued to be myself. And it benefits me in my work in the sense that I want people to know me for my work and not for my personal life. The downside is that suddenly the public doesn’t know as much about me apart from work. I do try to share it on social media, but I don’t open the doors of my intimacy completely either because I feel that once you open them it will be very difficult to close them.

in the coming months The Villamizar It will also be available to everyone on Netflix.
