Tokyo protests against Russia’s withdrawal from the dialogue on a peace treaty. The position of Japan was expressed by Foreign Minister Yoshimasa Hayashi, he is quoted by RIA Novosti.
“Attempts to link the reaction of Japan and bilateral relations are extremely unfair on the part of Russia and absolutely unacceptable. We strongly protest this,” Hayashi said. He added that the corresponding position was transferred by Vice Foreign Minister Yamada to Russian Ambassador Mikhail Galuzin.
The minister also called Russia’s reaction to anti-Russian sanctions “unfair”
Note that the Russian Federation and Japan have not yet concluded a peace treaty following the results of World War II due to the issue of ownership of the Kuril Islands. Both countries consider these territories their own. On March 21, 2022, Russia refused to negotiate a peace treaty with Japan in response to the sanctions imposed by Japan against the Russian Federation due to the situation in Ukraine.
Recall that on February 24, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin made an emergency appeal to the Russians and announced a special military operation in the Donbass. In his speech, he stated that “circumstances require decisive action from Russia” and stressed that “Russia will not allow Ukraine to have nuclear weapons.” In response to Russia’s actions, Western countries (USA, Canada, EU, UK, Japan) announced new, tougher sanctions against the Russian Federation, including financial and economic ones.
