The heads of the EU Foreign and Defense Ministries approved the first ever EU defense concept. The EU Strategic Compass concept implies the creation of its own Rapid Reaction Forces of up to 5 thousand people, RIA Novosti reports with reference to a statement by Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics.
The final approval of the strategy will take place at the EU summit on March 24-25.
It is noted that although the “Strategic Compass” has been in development since 2020 and is not related to the situation in Ukraine, however, the military operation of the Russian Federation has a serious impact on the final stage of the discussion.
The “EU Strategic Compass” is aimed at creating the EU’s ability to independently conduct military operations without the support of the US and NATO. The document states that the EU defense concept should complement NATO, not compete with it.
Recall, on February 24, Russian President Vladimir Putin made an emergency appeal to the Russians and announced a special military operation in the Donbass. In his speech, he stated that “circumstances require decisive action from Russia” and stressed that “Russia will not allow Ukraine to have nuclear weapons.” The goals of the special operation are called “demilitarization and denazification” of Ukraine.
