The company Speedo, which produces equipment for swimming, terminated the sponsorship contract with the Russian Evgeny Rylov, who is a two-time Olympic champion.

According to the Inside the Games portal, citing a company statement, the decision was made due to the athlete’s participation in a rally-concert in Moscow in honor of the annexation of Crimea, which took place on March 18. According to a statement from Speedo, the company “immediately terminated the sponsorship agreement with Rylov after he attended the Luzhniki event.”

On February 24, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin made an emergency appeal to the Russians and announced a special military operation in the Donbass. In his speech, he stated that “circumstances require decisive action from Russia” and stressed that “Russia will not allow Ukraine to have nuclear weapons.” In response to Russia’s actions, Western countries (USA, Canada, EU, UK, Japan) announced new, tougher sanctions against the Russian Federation, including financial and economic ones.
