Finnish President Sauli Niiniste believes that the country faces two options for a solution related to the security sphere: to join NATO or to strengthen defense cooperation with Sweden and the United States. Any of these decisions will lead to a change in today’s situation in Finland.

This is reported by the British newspaper Financial Times.

“It may seem that with the entry into NATO, our worries will end. But the various alternatives involve risks that we must acknowledge. At the moment, the main risk is the escalation of the situation in Europe,” the head of state added.

Earlier, the Finnish Foreign Ministry reported that a coordination group led by Finnish Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto will prepare a new report on changes in security policy due to Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine for submission to parliament. On the basis of this document, the Finnish Parliament and the country’s top leadership will discuss Finland’s strategy in the field of foreign and security policy against the backdrop of the changed situation in Europe.

One of the topics of discussion will be the possibility of Finland joining NATO, which is gaining more and more supporters in this neutral state. According to the latest public opinion poll commissioned by TV company Yle, 62% of Finnish people would like the country to join NATO.
