Taxi drivers operating in the city of Quito announce a sit-in, this Monday, March 21, starting at 04:00, demanding the exclusion of the pick-up and license plate measure for this sector and also asking for greater control over the operation of digital platforms that use private vehicles to provide the taxi service.
The secretary of mobility of the Metropolitan District of Quito, Ricardo Pozo, this Sunday, March 20, said that the taxi drivers’ unions are at a dialogue table and did not rule out that there are political factors that lead to taking this measure. He questioned whether this demonstration wants to happen yes or yes, without considering the previous meetings held.
Pozo blamed the Pichincha taxi leadership for the effects that may occur due to traffic congestion, delays to public officials, the inconvenience it will generate or any excess that may arise.
In a statement, signed by the leaders Carlos Brunis, Fernando Cadena, Alex Morales and Paco Velasco, they point out that the measure is taken in view of not having answers to their demands made to the municipality, one of them, the exclusion of the yellow units of the measure of vehicular restriction of the peak and license plate, for which the unionists called for a concentration in the Plaza Grande for all those who have restricted circulation this Monday.
Among the requests there is also the control of the illegality of digital platforms that use private vehicles to provide taxi services and informality; as well as requiring the capital municipality to issue a regulation resolution so that digital platforms use legal vehicles.
Carlos Brunis commented that they have asked all the taxi drivers who have a beak and badge on Monday to join the sit-in in rejection of the lack of control operations against informality.
According to the leader, he hopes to hold a meeting with the municipal authorities tomorrow and they are not received, they will leave again on Tuesday.
He acknowledged that they are in dialogue tables and that the last meeting was held last week where it was stated that a resolution was necessary.
Brunis revealed that the sector’s demand is that taxi drivers be excluded from the bill and plate regulation, because commercial transport according to the law is one. He said that there is talk of economic reactivation, but it is not allowed to provide the service of the taxi system in a normal way. (I)
