Scientists believe that eating special-colored muffins can serve as a warning sign of poor gut health. It is reported by DailyMail.

If a colored cake passes through your system too quickly, it could indicate inflammatory bowel disease. If it takes more than 60 hours for the body to digest a blue muffin, it may signal a risk of type 2 diabetes.

Dr Sarah Berry, a nutritionist at King’s College London who helped develop the muffin test, says “blue stool problems” can give doctors valuable clues that something is wrong with a patient’s GI tract.

In the test, the researchers asked people in the US and UK to eat cupcakes dyed blue for breakfast. They used about a quarter teaspoon of food coloring, which is available online. Other colors, such as red, were not used because they could be mistaken for beets or, for example, blood.

According to the results of the study, it turned out that the “golden mean” for the digestion of colored muffins can be considered an interval of 20 hours. That is how much a healthy person should pass between the absorption of a confectionery product and its “exit”.
