If the conflict over Ukraine drags on, the EU may refuse to purchase energy resources – gas, oil and coal – from Russia. According to TASS, the Spanish newspaper El País writes about this.
According to the publication, citing diplomatic sources, the next package of EU restrictive measures against the Russian Federation will almost completely exhaust the “space for sanctions maneuver” and force the issue of an energy gap with Moscow to be considered. A number of EU countries, including Germany, do not yet support such a measure. Debates on this issue have been going on since the beginning of the week and, as the newspaper notes, a decision is not yet expected.
Pressure on countries not willing to sever energy ties with Russia could intensify if US President Joe Biden insists on such a measure at the EU summit next week. The European Commission is analyzing the possible consequences of a complete or partial refusal to supply energy resources from the Russian Federation.
On February 24, the Russian Federation launched a special operation to protect the LDNR, which was preceded by the recognition of the independence of the people’s republics by Moscow. President Vladimir Putin said that “circumstances require Russia to act decisively” and that it will not allow Kyiv to acquire nuclear weapons. Following this, Western countries began to impose the most severe anti-Russian sanctions.
