Rains cause the suspension of the drinking water service in Portoviejo

Portoviejo

The heavy rain that fell on Friday night in the Santa Ana canton, province of Manabí, generates problems not only for that town but also for its neighbor Portoviejo, a city that captures the water that emerges from the river that bears the name of the Manabi capital and which is born from tributaries of Santa Ana.

From the municipal public company of Portoviejo, Portoaguas, it was indicated that the constant and heavy rains that fell during the hours of Friday night and early this Saturday, March 19, in the upper area of the Salazar Barragán dam, produced the descent of palisade and the increase in turbidity to more than 11,000 NTU (turbidity levels).

Rains in Manabí generate floods and interruption of the drinking water service

Given this, the Public Water Company (EPA), in charge of controlling the dams in Manabí, closed the catchment channel. For this reason, the suspension of the drinking water service for Portoviejo is expected to last approximately until the afternoon and evening hours of this Saturday.

“Based on the monitoring carried out by our staff, it is expected that the turbidity will reach the plant in the course of the morning, for that reason the impulsion of the tanks will be lowered and therefore the distribution of the vital liquid to the city,” said Xavier Solís, Director of Operations of Portoaguas.

The official indicated that the sectors that will be affected are those that are in the upper parts and far from the network, where the water pressure will be normalized at night and early this Sunday, March 20.

The Santa Ana Fire Department reported that the rains on Friday night increased the flow of the Portoviejo River, and that they were monitoring the contributors of this mighty torrent.

Even the firefighters of that city do not rule out or affirm that water enters this city of Manabi. (I)
