The head of the largest financial institution in Germany, Deutsche Bank, Christian Sewing opposed the shutdown of the Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline and said that additional sanctions would begin to negatively affect those who accept them. It is reported by Die Welt.

Zewing acknowledged that the sanctions have caused enormous damage to the Russian economy. “But they also have a negative impact on us, and we must endure it. We need to check again and again whether even stronger sanctions are needed,” he said, stressing that if the government deems new measures necessary, Deutsche Bank will support them.

Zewing also criticized the proposal to turn off Nord Stream 1. “If we turn it off, this will not mean the end of Russian gas supplies to Germany, but will quickly lead to serious problems with energy supply and a significant increase in prices in our country,” Zewing said.

Earlier it was reported that Deutsche Bank is curtailing its business in Russia due to a special operation in Ukraine and refuses to participate in new projects in Russia.

On February 24, the Russian Federation launched a special operation to protect the LDNR, which was preceded by the recognition of the independence of the people’s republics by Moscow. President Vladimir Putin said that “circumstances require Russia to act decisively” and that it will not allow Kyiv to acquire nuclear weapons. Following this, Western countries began to impose the most severe anti-Russian sanctions.
