What are the current rules in Ecuador with the new scenario of the COVID-19 pandemic?

Juan Zapata, president of the national Emergency Operations Committee (COE), announced this Friday, March 18, the end of the restrictive measures that have governed the country for two years of the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite that, some prevention protocols are maintained.

According to the Ministry of Public Health (MSP), the positivity rate in virus detection tests is currently 9%. In Ecuador only the omicron variant circulates; there are no longer cases of delta (which, due to its rapid spread, produced more hospitalizations and deaths).

Capacity in sporting events, restaurants, cinemas, shopping centers and workplaces will be 100% from today in Ecuador. Restrictions end, announces President Guillermo Lasso

These results, considered favorable, led the national government to eliminate capacity restrictions in both public and private places, as well as in entertainment and work places. Added to this is the fact that after the carnival holiday there has been no increase in cases of the virus.

Below are the current provisions:

The presentation of the certificate or vaccination card with a complete schedule (two doses or one dose, as appropriate) for entry to places of attention to the public to any person over 12 years of age.

The mandatory presentation of the certificate applies exclusively to non-essential activities. Those dedicated to health, education, work and public services are exempt.

The use of a mask, hand hygiene, adequate ventilation and social distancing remains in force.

For those who enter the country by air, the requirement to present the digital traveler’s health declaration (QR code) will be maintained. This must be reviewed by the airline before boarding, as well as the health requirements, such as a vaccination card or RT-PCR test.

Two years after confinement by COVID-19, cases in Guayaquil stand at 1.51 per 10,000 inhabitants

The presentation of the declaration in physical form should not be requested; This form will only be used in exceptional cases, in which travelers do not have internet service or access to technological mechanisms. These requirements must be presented prior to shipment to Ecuador.

The provision governs that all educational institutions with permission to operate in face-to-face mode return to face-to-face classes with full capacity (100%) at all educational levels in the Sierra-Amazon regime; and, as of May 6, 2022, in the Costa-Galapagos regime, in compliance with the school schedule.
