Europe must increase defense investment to be prepared for a possible high-intensity armed conflict. This, according to TASS, was announced by the French leader Emmanuel Macron during the presentation of his election program at a rally in Paris.
Macron told the audience that the French armed forces are “the only full-fledged army on the European continent.” According to him, the annual funding of the French Armed Forces will grow from 40.9 billion euros to 50 billion euros by 2025. Since 2020, France, as the head of state noted, has been spending 2% of GDP on military needs.
He believes that such a strategy should be reflected throughout Europe. France, as Macron noted, is called upon to play a consolidating role in strengthening European security.
Earlier, EU leaders agreed to increase defense investment and strengthen coordination in the defense sector. The head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, noted that Russia’s special operation in Ukraine has led to fundamental changes in the security sector in Europe. “In order to defend Europe, we will need other forces and capabilities. Significantly larger investments will be required. In this regard, some European leaders have already made a statement to increase defense spending. We need a coordinated approach that will allow us to develop our defense industry, the compatibility of our armed forces,” she said.
