The reopening of the border between Ecuador and Colombia would take place when the two countries achieve herd immunity against COVID-19

The Ecuadorian Foreign Ministry clarified that there is still no specific date for the opening of the Rumichaca international bridge.

When Ecuador and Colombia achieve herd immunity against COVID-19, that is, when they reach 80% of the population’s vaccination with two doses, The Rumichaca international bridge could be reopened, reported the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

There is no specific date yet for this to happen, clarified Ambassador María Gabriela Troya, Undersecretary of Sovereignty and Neighborhood Relations.

Currently, the health teams of both countries are working on technical tables with the purpose that the reopening is carried out taking care of the health of the population, particularly that found in the border area, explained Troya.

Opening the bridge will depend on the report issued by the Ministry of Health, which will be put to the consideration of the Special Emergency Committee (CEE), which is the entity responsible for the opening, reopening and closing of border crossings.

The blockade on the passage of goods through the Rumichaca international bridge ended

The undersecretary announced that On November 26, at the northern border, a symbolic binational vaccination event is planned, which would have the participation of the Ministers of Health of Ecuador and Colombia, Ximena Garzón and Fernando Ruiz Gómez, respectively.

On October 4, The Ipiales Border Merchants Association (Acceprof) blocked the Rumichaca bridge for five days, preventing the passage of vehicles with merchandise, as a measure of pressure for Ecuador to open the border. (I)
