A small group of Syrian volunteers are planning to come to Ukraine to participate in a Russian special operation, according to the Pentagon. According to TASS, this was announced by the head of the Central Command (CENTCOM) of the US Armed Forces, General Kenneth Mackenzie.

“We believe that a small, very small group of people may be trying to get into Ukraine from Syria,” he said in response to a question whether volunteers from the Middle East are trying to assist the Russian side in Ukraine. McKenzie noted that he could provide details at a closed hearing.

On March 12, US State Department spokesman Ned Price said that sending volunteers from Syria to Ukraine to participate in a military special operation could be seen as a further escalation of the conflict by Russia.

Earlier, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu at a meeting of Russian President Vladimir Putin with the Security Council invited Putin to attract volunteers to Ukraine. “If you see that there are people who want to come on a voluntary basis and help people living in Donbass, you need to meet them halfway and help them move to the war zone,” the head of state said.

Recall that on February 24, Vladimir Putin announced the start of a special military operation in Ukraine. The head of Shoigu stated that the main task of this operation is to protect Russia from the military threat from Western countries, which “are trying to use the Ukrainian people in the fight against our country.” In response to this decision, sanctions began to be imposed on Russia.
