Baku, in connection with the parliamentary elections held in Abkhazia, said that it did not agree with either their holding or with the results. The statement of the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry leads the Haqqin.az portal.

“Once again we reaffirm our support for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Georgia,” the ministry stressed. It stated that the Azerbaijani authorities cannot “recognize the so-called parliamentary elections” in the republic that said goodbye to Tbilisi 13.5 years ago.

The diplomats added that “the continuation of negotiations in accordance with the norms and principles of international law” is extremely important for a peaceful solution to the Abkhazian issue.

The first round of elections to the Abkhaz People’s Assembly of Deputies took place on March 12. Observers from Russia and LDNR stated that there were no violations on the voting day.

On the night of August 8, 2008, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev announced the entry of troops into South Ossetia, and an operation “to enforce peace” began. As a result of the Five-Day War, Moscow and the leaders of South Ossetia, Abkhazia and Georgia signed a peace plan. Russia recognized both regions as independent, for which Georgia severed diplomatic relations with it.
