400 butterflies and 100 pupae will be in a temporary exhibition at the Quito Zoo.
For some years now, the gardens of the city of Quito have stopped witnessing the fluttering of butterflies. Their populations are increasingly rare, so the Quito Zoo, through the initiative “To fly”, Seeks to sensitize its visitors about the role of these colorful insects as indicators of environmental quality and the health of ecosystems.
The Quito Zoo initiative includes a temporary exhibition, which is made up of 400 butterflies and 100 pupae, and among the main protagonists are the blue morpho-Andean butterfly, owl-eyed butterfly, passion flower butterflies and several more..
The institution indicates that it is an “immersive experience” with the public, which fosters knowledge about butterflies, so that citizens value them, take care of them and promote positive practices that help to attract butterflies to the city again.
The life cycle and transformation of butterflies also takes place in the butterfly farm, with metamorphosed cocoons and the first flight of a butterfly out of its chrysalis.
“It is important to promote the ability to marvel at animals as delicate as butterflies, which also play a very important role since they promote pollination and the evolution of the plant world; delicate animals that are radically transformed to be free ”, indicates Martín Bustamante, director of the zoo.
Behind “Volare”, there is a technical work to recreate the tropical environment typical of these butterflies, to promote suitable conditions for a life in conditions of well-being. The proposal emphasizes the aspects of education and awareness with an experience specifically proposed for girls and boys between 3 and 6 years old.
The exhibition is free to the public with the regular cost of tickets to the zoo ($ 6 adults, $ 4 boys and girls from 3 to 11 years old, $ 3 Seniors). Tickets can be purchased at the following link: buenplan.com.ec/event/Zoolidarizate. (I)
